VOICES of the Staff seeks volunteers

VOICES of the Staff is seeking volunteers to join six network groups to continue the dialog between administration and staff begun in February 2005 when the first VOICES network was formed.

VOICES provides a formal means for staff members to share their ideas with University executives on campus community issues, and serves as a sounding board for leadership about issues affecting staff.

University staff with at least one year of service can volunteer to serve on the network group of their choice by completing an application.

Members are chosen from the pool of applicants to create a microcosm of the larger U-M staff community in terms of career families, academic and administrative units, and other demographics.

Voices members meet for 1 1/2 hours each month to serve in a network of six topic-specific groups.

Michigan Healthy Community program offers help for those who take multiple medications

The University of Michigan is launching an innovative program to help improve health and reduce costs for U-M employees, retirees and dependents who take multiple prescription medications, starting with those who take nine or more.

If successful, the project could be expanded, and the data gathered could help other employers and insurers develop similar programs.

U-M Children’s Center to be renovated

Renovation of the U-M Children’s Center at 400 North Ingalls Building was approved by the Regents at their February meeting. The renovation will improve classrooms, the playground and the kitchen, and will increase storage and teacher work space as well as add a room for the care of infants.

The renovation is part of President Coleman’s Child Care Initiative, which will upgrade facilities housing our early childhood care and education programs, increase the number of spaces available for children up to five years old, and develop infant/toddler programs. The renovation will take place this summer, between April 15 and Aug. 15. The Children’s Center will reopen on Sept. 7.

Enrollment is currently open for infants who will be between 3 months and 10 months of age by September. Morning and afternoon sessions are offered, Monday through Friday. For more information, please contact Ann DeMare at (734) 647-2668.

A campus-wide “Baby Shower” is planned to celebrate the first steps of the Child Care Initiative toward increasing infant/toddler care. This will include an opportunity to contribute new toys and equipment to the Children’s Center. Baby Shower details will be posted on the Work/Life Resource Center and U-M Children’s Center Web sites in May.

Workplace Awards Call for Nominations

The Workplace 2007: University of Michigan Staff Recognition Awards call for nominations has been sent through campus mail to all members of the University community.

Online nominations can be made at; http://www.umich.edu/~hraa/workplace/.

The Office of Human Resources & Affirmative Action is pleased to honor staff members who have made marked contributions to the mission and work of this institution with this University-wide award.

All staff members, including bargained-for staff, are eligible for nomination. Members of the University community—staff, faculty and students—are invited to nominate University staff members for the following awards:

The Distinguished Service Award honors an individual University staff member who has provided distinguished service to the University and to the community.

The Exemplary Team Award honors a group of University staff members who have functioned as an exemplary team, whether formally or informally designated.

The Outstanding Leadership Award honors an individual University staff member who has demonstrated outstanding leadership, vision and initiative.

University of Michigan Children’s Center Kindergarten Program Now Accepting Applications for September 2007

The University of Michigan Children’s Center (UMCC) located in the 400 North Ingalls Building is accepting applications for its kindergarten program for enrollment in September 2007.

The Children’s Center’s kindergarten program is designed to enhance curiosity, problem-solving and creative thinking including a variety of weekly math, reading and writing projects, as well as small and large group times. The program’s small class size (maximum of 20), elementary-certified teaching staff and high level of child/teacher interaction and parent/teacher communication make this an excellent adjunct or alternative to other kindergarten programs.

The Children’s Center’s kindergarten is fully certified to meet public school curriculum guidelines. Applications will be accepted until available fall openings are filled.

The kindergarten class meets Monday through Friday, 8:30-11:45 a.m. with an option for a full day program (7:30 a.m.-5:45 p.m.).

MFit Weight Management Program Starts April 30th  

If you, or someone you know is struggling to lose weight, tell them about the MFit Weight Management Program: Healthy Habits for Life.

This unique program combines group support, individual guidance, strategies for developing healthy eating and physical activity habits, and support for overcoming psychological barriers. 

Led by degreed and certified dietitians, health and fitness specialists, and health behavior specialists from the U-M Health System, the program focuses on taking small steps to create lasting behavior changes that lead to a healthier lifestyle.

The next 12-week program starts the week of April 30th at these Ann Arbor locations:

Wolverine Tower
Mondays, 5:30 – 6:30 p.m.

North Campus Administrative Complex
Wednesdays, 5:30 -6:30 p.m.

TIAA CREF: Three Ways to Benefit From the New IRS Limits for Qualified Retirement Plans in 2007

  1. Most employees can contribute up to $15,500 or 100% of their compensation, whichever is less.

  2. If you’re age 50 or older, you MAY be able to contribute an additional $5,000.

  3. If you have 15 years or more of service, you MAY be able to contribute an additional $3,000, for a total maximum amount of $23,500.
