TITLE: APPRENTICE HIGH VOLTAGE ELECTRICIAN GRADE: A8

BASIC FUNCTION AND RESPONSIBILITY
As an apprentice to perform electrical work in the installation, maintenance and repair of primary electrical (high voltage 4800 volts and above) equipment and cables.
CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Perform the following duties as an apprentice:
Fabricate and install high voltage controls and secondary distribution apparatus, including meter relays and circuit-breakers.
Splice and terminate a variety of high voltage primary cables.
Dismantle and repair primary electrical equipment, replacing defective cables, transformers, sectionalizing boxes, pot-heads and burned out fuses.
Test high voltage electrical circuits in installed or repaired equipment, using electrical measuring instruments, such as DC high pots, mega ohmmeters and fault locators.
Analyze malfunctions of primary high voltage electrical equipment, using ammeter, voltmeter, ohmmeter drawings, visual inspection, meggers and high potting equipment.
Perform preventive maintenance activities, including periodic visual inspections and the testing of shunts, switches, series tripping devices, disconnects and air circuit breakers.
Inspect new high voltage primary electrical installations for compliance with applicable state and local codes.
RELATED DUTIES
Cut, thread and route primary conduit and underground duct systems and pull high voltage cable through conduit by means of power pullers.
Fabricate and install control and distribution apparatus, including switches relays and circuit breaker panels.
Connect wiring to electrical fixtures and power equipment.
Cut, thread, bind and route conduit and pull wire through conduit by means of fish tape.
Analyze malfunctions of electrical equipment and test continuity of electrical circuits installed or of repaired equipment.
Dismantle and repair defective wires, motor brushes, condensers and burned out fuses.
Sketch, read and interpret blueprints, diagrams, sketches, circuit diagrams and job specifications.
Prepare records and service reports of materials and time expended.
Read watt hour meters.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Receives supervision from a designated official.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED
No supervisory responsibility is exercised.
QUALIFICATIONS
Graduation from high school.
Completion of course work in mathematics, electrical repair and related technical areas is desirable.
Some experience in electrical and mechanical repair work is desirable.
