TITLE: STEAMFITTER GRADE: T6

BASIC FUNCTION AND RESPONSIBILITY
To assemble, install and repair piping, fixtures and equipment used in the production and distribution of steam or hot water under low or high pressure.
CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Install, inspect and repair steam and water lines, equipment, radiators, traps, valves, pumps, gauges, controls, fittings and accessories.
Cut pipe, using hacksaw, pipe cutters, hammer and chisel, and cutting torch.
Thread pipe, using threading machine, and bend pipe by hand or with pipe-bending machine.
Assemble and install pipe and pipe fittings of brass, copper, lead, glass, plastic and other materials.
Join piping by means of threaded, calked, wiped, soldered, brazed, fused, cemented or welded joints.
Test piping systems for leaks, using gauges.
Secure pipes to structures with clamps, brackets and hangers.
Install and maintain boilers, and refrigeration and air-conditioning systems.
Read and interpret blueprints, diagrams, sketches and job specifications.
Cut or bore through walls, ceilings or partitions.
Prepare records and service reports of materials and time expended.

Receives supervision from a designated official.

No supervisory responsibility.
QUALIFICATIONS
Graduation from high school.
Considerable knowledge of the methods, equipment and materials used in the installation and repair of steam and hot water systems and fixtures.
Reasonable responsible work experience in the installation and repair of steam and hot water systems.
Considerable skill in the operation of steamfitting tools and machinery.
Ability to operate power tools and perform steamfitting tasks safely.
Ability to exercise tact and discretion in relationships with others.
Reasonable knowledge of state and local heating and boiler codes.
Ability to read and interpret blueprints and specifications.
Reasonable physical strength and dexterity.
Reasonable knowledge of the maintenance requirements of steam and water lines, fixtures and controls.
